Our GP Appointment System

Our GP rota varies from day to day, it is normally a mixture of 10 day embargoed telephone appointments, 10 day embargoed face-to-face appointments, emergency on the day appointments, GP follow-up slots, home visit appointments and administration.

Morning clinics normally consist of a total of 16 appointments:

  • 5 x 10 minute telephone appointments embargoed 10 days – these are pre-bookable by reception 10 days in advanced
  • 4 x 10 minute GP follow-up appointments – these are booked by GPs only for their own follow-ups
  • 40 minute morning meeting
  • 7 x 15 minute face-to-face appointments – these are a mixture of pre-bookable by reception 10 days in advanced and for the on-call GP to use to book patients in for emergency on the day face-to-face appointments
  • 40 minutes administration

Afternoon clinics normally consist of a total of 12 appointments:

  • 2 x 15 minutes of home visit appointments
  • 2 x 10 minute GP follow-up appointments – these are booked by GPs only for their own follow-ups
  • 7 x 15 minute face-to-face appointments – these are a mixture of pre-bookable by reception 10 days in advanced and for the on-call GP to use to book patients in for emergency on the day face-to-face appointments
  • 1.75 hours administration

We have an on-call GP daily to deal with all the emergency on-the-day issues,  for this to work we keep back 22 x GP on the day appointments on a Monday and then on a Tuesday to Friday we reserve 13 appointments for this.  Depending on the number of GPs we have working on any one day does influence the number of the 15 minute face-to-face appointments we have to allocate to the pre-bookable face-to-face slots.
